GLP-1 receptor agonists like Ozempic (semaglutide) and Mounjaro (tirzepatide) have transformed the landscape of medical weight management and diabetes treatment. While these medications offer real benefits—like improved blood sugar control and significant weight loss—they can come with a hefty price tag.
A common question many patients ask is:
Can I use insurance or Medisave to pay for GLP-1 medications?
Here’s what you need to know.
What Are GLP-1 Agonists Used For?
GLP-1 receptor agonists are medications that:
- Help regulate blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes
- Suppress appetite and slow stomach emptying, aiding in weight loss
- Reduce cardiovascular risk in certain high-risk patients
Common GLP-1 medications include:
- Ozempic – Approved in Singapore for type 2 diabetes management
- Wegovy – Semaglutide at a higher dose, approved for weight loss (not yet available in Singapore)
- Mounjaro – Tirzepatide, another GLP-1/GIP dual agonist, not yet available in Singapore
Is Ozempic Covered by Insurance in Singapore?
For Diabetes: Sometimes, Yes
If Ozempic is prescribed for type 2 diabetes, some integrated shield plans or employer-provided insurance may partially reimburse the cost—depending on your policy.
However:
- Coverage usually requires medical justification and MOH-approved indications
- Pre-approval or documentation from your doctor may be needed
- Patients should check directly with their insurer
For Weight Loss: Usually No
If Ozempic is prescribed off-label for weight loss in patients without diabetes, it is typically not covered under standard health insurance plans in Singapore.
Can I Use Medisave for Ozempic?
For Diabetes: Sometimes, Yes
As of now:
- Ozempic may be covered by Medisave or CHAS if it is determined by your doctor that your diabetes will also benefit from weight management therapy, as an adjunctive to lifestyle modification and combined with diet and physical activity, when BMI is ≥27.5 kg/m2
If your BMI is < 27.5: No
- Ozempic is not claimable if your BMI is below 27.5 even if you are diabetic.
Are There Any Subsidies or Alternatives?
Patients may want to explore:
- CHAS / PG / MG Cards: May offer subsidised consultation fees, but not the medication cost unless they have eligible diagnoses
- Hospital-based subsidies: If managed at a public hospital under subsidised care, some medications may be partially subsidised depending on MOH policy and drug approval status
- Generic medications or alternative diabetes drugs that are Medisave-claimable (e.g., metformin, gliclazide, etc.)
Bottom Line
While Ozempic is a powerful medication for both diabetes and weight management, it is not currently covered by Medisave, and insurance may only cover it if prescribed for type 2 diabetes.
