What is dengue fever?

Dengue fever is caused by an infection with the dengue virus. The dengue virus can be spread to you through the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito. An Aedes mosquito is infected when it draws blood from a dengue-infected person. Dengue fever is not contagious from person to person.

What are the symptoms of dengue fever?

Symptoms may include:

  • Sudden onset of fever for two to seven days
  • Severe headache with behind the eye pain
  • Joint and muscle pain
  • Skin rashes
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Bleeding from the nose or gums or easy bruising of the skin

There is a more severe form of dengue fever known as dengue hemorrhagic fever / dengue shock syndrome, which can result in death.
