Prostate Health & Screening

Prostate cancer is the third most common cancer among men in Singapore, and its incidence rises with age. Like many cancers, prostate cancer often develops silently in the early stages, making routine prostate health screening crucial for early detection.

Why Prostate Screening Matters

Most early-stage prostate cancers do not cause symptoms. Left undetected, it can spread beyond the prostate to bones or lymph nodes. With timely detection, prostate cancer is one of the most treatable cancers, often requiring only monitoring or minimally invasive treatment.

Common Prostate Conditions

  • Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH): Non-cancerous prostate enlargement
  • Prostatitis: Inflammation or infection of the prostate
  • Prostate Cancer: Malignant tumour in the prostate, usually slow-growing

Prostate Screenings Tests Available

PSA Blood Test
(Prostate-Specific Antigen)

  • Measures the level of PSA in your blood
  • Elevated PSA may indicate prostate cancer, BPH, or prostatitis
  • Not diagnostic on its own—used to guide further investigation

Prostate Ultrasound

(Transabdominal or Transrectal)

from $120

  • Used to evaluate prostate size, shape, and abnormalities
  • Helpful and affordable way to assess urinary symptoms or raised PSA levels

Digital Rectal Examination (DRE)

  • Performed by a doctor to feel for any irregularities in the prostate
  • May detect hard or asymmetrical areas not picked up by PSA

Multiparametric Prostate MRI (mpMRI)

  • Advanced imaging used to characterise suspicious lesions
  • Often used before biopsy to target abnormal areas
  • A 3T (3 Tesla) MRI is preferred for prostate cancer imaging because it provides higher image quality and resolution, leading to better detection of prostate cancer

Who Should Be Screened?

Men Aged 50 and Above (Average Risk)

  • Consider PSA blood test and DRE annually
  • Particularly important if there are urinary symptoms (e.g. weak stream, frequent urination

Men Aged 45 and Above (High Risk)

You may benefit from earlier screening if you:

  • Have a first-degree relative with prostate cancer
  • Are of African or South Asian descent (higher global risk)
  • Have had previously elevated PSA

Prostate cancer screening should be personalised, based on age, risk factors, and life expectancy. Speak with our doctors for tailored advice.

Symptoms of Prostate Issues

See a doctor if you experience:

  • Frequent or urgent urination (especially at night)
  • Weak or interrupted urine stream
  • Painful urination or ejaculation
  • Blood in urine or semen
  • Pelvic or lower back discomfort

Remember: Many men with early prostate cancer have no symptoms.
