Symptoms of high blood pressure, Do I have hypertension?

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is one of the most common chronic conditions in Singapore. If left uncontrolled – it will lead to long-term risks of heart disease, strokes, kidney failure. This is why it is important to recognise the symptoms and act on it quickly.

That being said – hypertension is often termed as a ‘silent killer’.

This means there are usually no symptoms, and there can be no symptoms for years, while the effects of high blood pressure are already accumulating on your organs.

This is why our doctors always suggest regular blood pressure monitoring at home.

What should I do if I have such symptoms?

As a first step, you can check your own blood pressure at home. If it is elevated i.e, >140 mmHg systolic or >100 mmHg diastolic – please make an appointment to see our doctors for further evaluation.

Further tests may need to be conducted to assess for underlying reasons, any existing organ impairments or complications as well as co-morbid risk factors such as high cholesterol and diabetes.

Our doctor will also likely suggest that you keep a record of your home blood pressure readings for them to assess the general trend of your pressure readings.

After these information have been gathered, we will be able to advice you on an appropriate treatment plan.
